Repinning and restringing
For a piano to hold its tuning and sound good, the tuning pins must be tight and the strings in good condition. When the pins become loose and start to slip, the piano can no longer hold its tuning for a reasonable time.
Replacing upright piano casters
Replacing the casters on an upright piano is a simple job that can usually be done in your home. Using a piano tilter, we gently lay the instrument on its back to reach the wheels. The casters and their mounts are removed, any structural repairs are made, and a new set is installed.
Upright hammer replacement
Upright piano hammers are extremely durable, but they wear over time and eventually need to be replaced. Worn hammers can make the tone harsh and unpleasant, and make it harder to control touch and musical expression.
Refelting the keybed
The quiet operation of piano keys depends on three sets of felts: front rail punchings, balance rail punchings, and back rail cloth.
These felts act as cushions, absorbing unwanted sounds and playing a crucial role in determining both the height of the keys and the depth of the keystroke. Over time, these felts become thinner and harder due to continued playing.
Regluing jack flanges
On upright pianos, a common repair is regluing jack flanges that have come loose. The jack is the part that propels the hammer toward the strings when you press a key, so it is under constant mechanical stress as you play.
Hammer Head Filing
When the hammers on a piano develop deep grooves from regular use, resurfacing can restore clarity and brightness in tone.
Key leveling
On a well-regulated piano, the keys are perfectly aligned across the whole keyboard. When they are properly leveled, the key surfaces sit at a uniform height. No key should look visibly higher or lower than the others when you look at the keyboard from the side.
