Key Rebushing
For piano keys to regain the “new piano” feel, a quality set of bushings is essential. Felt bushings are to piano keys what piston rings are to an engine’s pistons. Without rings, pistons would clatter loosely and ineffectively inside their cylinders. Similarly, without bushings, the wooden keysticks would rattle against the guide pins that keep them aligned. When bushings harden with age or come loose and fall out, keys become wobbly, giving the piano a distinctive “old piano” feel.
This job is usually performed in a workshop. It involves carefully removing the old bushings, precisely measuring the felt to be used, and expertly installing and adjusting the new bushing cloth.
Functionality of the Parts
The wooden portion of the key (the “keystick”) operates much like a child’s seesaw. The center of each key rests on the balance rail, which acts as a fulcrum. Two polished metal guide pins (front rail pin and balance rail pin) keep the key aligned. Felt punchings (the green and white felts seen in the photos above) cushion the keys from underneath, while felt bushings (the red felts in both photos) ensure a snug fit and silent operation of each key.

With your keys rebushed, your piano will be significantly more responsive to your touch, bringing it closer to its factory-new condition and making playing it much more enjoyable.
