Your tuning technicians
Allan Sutton
Allan has been tuning and repairing pianos for over 20 years.
Showing an aptitude for music at an early age, he studied at École de musique Vincent-d’Indy before going on to earn a master’s degree in piano interpretation from the Université de Montréal. As a top-notch pianist and versatile artist, his work as a piano technician and tuner is informed by his passion for music.
His technical skill and extreme musicality combined with a profound grasp of mechanics and physics are what account for his high standing among both colleagues and clients.
Nicolas Lessard
Nicolas is an accomplished double bass player who graduated from Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, University of Montreal and the Trois-Rivières Music Conservatory.
A musician moved by passion and inquisitiveness, Nicolas has specialized in baroque music. Over a period of fifteen years, he has participated in CD recordings and toured with Arion ensemble, Caprice, Les Idées Heureuses, Les Boréades as well as the Trois-Rivières Symphony Orchestra.
Endowed with an exceptionally keen ear for appraising the characteristics of sound, he has devoted the recent years to piano maintenance and tuning, and is now an associate of Piano Technique Montreal.
Jean-Philippe Reny
A professional musician with twenty years of experience, Jean-Philippe Reny specializes in restoring antique instruments and in the study of musical temperaments, with a particular passion for Middle Eastern music.
A graduate in cabinetmaking from the École des métiers d’art, Jean-Philippe deepened his musical knowledge by studying the oud and Middle Eastern music. He has played with various ensembles and bands, recorded several albums and toured in Europe and the Americas.
For more than ten years, he has worked closely with Boaz Berney, a renowned maker of baroque flutes, as assistant maker. His command of materials such as wood and metal, combined with his love of music, makes him a valuable member of the Piano Technique Montréal team.
Louise Paradis — Coordinator
Louise holds a bachelor’s degree in piano interpretation from the Université de Montréal. She has been dedicated to teaching for many years. She has also studied and worked in information technology as a consultant. Her versatility allows her to listen attentively to the musical needs of clients for her work of coordinating administrative activities.
Our story
I have been tuning and repairing pianos for over 20 years, and in 2007 I founded Piano Technique Montréal.
In 2014, while we were both touring as musicians with Le Moulin à Musique, in collaboration with the Ensemble contemporain de Montréal, Nicolas became very interested in my passion for piano technology and wondered how to train for it. I suggested an apprenticeship. He was ready to try, and I was thrilled to pass on my craft to such a motivated apprentice. It paid off: in 2017, we were ready to join forces and officially became business partners.
Our certification “Registered Piano Technician”
Allan Sutton and Nicolas Lessard both hold the prestigious Registered Piano Technician (RPT) title. This credential is granted by the Piano Technicians Guild, whose mission is to promote the highest level of excellence in the piano industry.
Three exams must be passed with a score of at least 80%. The first is a written exam on general knowledge and every technical aspect of the piano. The second is a practical repair and regulation exam in which candidates demonstrate their skills on both upright and grand pianos. The third is a tuning exam in which the accuracy and stability of the work are rigorously assessed by a panel of experts.
