FAQ
How can I tell if a piano is in good condition?
Ideally, have an experienced technician inspect it before you decide to buy or restore it. Otherwise, you can consult us remotely by following this link.
How much does a tuning cost?
At PTM, a maintenance and tuning visit is $255 + tax, all included: the tuning, vacuuming and keyboard cleaning, fixing small annoyances, and time for you to play before and after. If further work is needed, you get a clear written quote.
On the market, tunings range from about $80 to $300. The difference comes down to the time spent, the technician’s experience and what is included. At PTM, we get back to you quickly by phone, text or email, accept many payment options, including debit and credit cards, and our technicians have access to the best tools and ongoing training.
How much is my piano worth?
An instrument’s market value depends on its original quality, its age and its wear, but also on the market. To get an idea, you can look at buying and selling sites and compare similar pianos. Keep in mind that the asking price is not necessarily the final negotiated price.

How many keys does a piano have?
Today’s standard is 88 keys, but you can still find pianos with 85, 96 or, exceptionally, 104 keys. The number of keys has varied over the centuries, starting at about 65 on the first fortepianos.
Who invented the piano?
Several people contributed to the development of the fortepiano, essentially a keyboard instrument capable of nuance, able to play soft and loud, meant to go beyond the expressive limits of the harpsichord. But it is Cristofori, in 1709, who got the credit.
Can I tune my piano myself?
Tuning a piano takes considerable training and practice to get a satisfying result without damaging the instrument.
Is my old piano still good?
Short of having a technician come and inspect it, you can book one of our remote consultations by Zoom to get our advice.
How do I sell my piano?
Besides classified ads on Kijiji, LesPAC, Craigslist, Marketplace and the like, you can use specialized buying and selling sites. Some charge a fee but can attract serious buyers.
