Hammer Head Filing

When the hammers on a piano develop deep grooves from regular use, resurfacing can restore clarity and brightness in tone.

Felt wraps around strings, resulting in poor tone

Wear is measured by the depth of the cut marks in the striking surface. Once these grooves reach a certain depth, they negatively impact sound quality. The felt wraps around the strings, causing a soft, imprecise strike and producing undesirable tones.

Precise strike improves clarity and tone

Filing restores the hammer’s shape, ensuring cleaner contact with the strings and improved tonal response. This process is often performed alongside other maintenance steps such as voicing and action regulation.
