Bridle strap replacement

An essential repair for your piano

At Piano Technique Montréal, we are committed to providing high-quality maintenance to ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your piano. Among the necessary interventions over time, strap replacement is a crucial repair that ensures the proper functioning of the mechanism.

Why replace the straps?

The straps play a crucial role in the proper functioning of a piano’s mechanism. They serve two main purposes:

  • Maintaining the action in place – The straps allow for the safe removal and reinstallation of the mechanism without risk of damage.
  • Ensuring the return of the hammers – They support the natural movement of the hammers, complementing the function of the repetition spring.

If a strap is missing or defective, the mechanism becomes unstable, leading to potential misalignments and additional damage during future maintenance. Additionally, old and dry straps can cause clicking noises while playing, affecting both sound quality and playing comfort.

If the action of an upright piano is removed for servicing and a bridle strap is broken or missing, the lower portion of the mechanism (the wippen) will swing down.

At the same time, the portion of the action which rests upon the key will also swing down too far, as shown in the above photo. This is where trouble can occur.

When a bridle strap is missing and the action is returned to the piano, the jack (the vertical part shown in the above photo) is prone to jamming up against the underside of the hammer butt.

In such a situation, if the action is pushed into place with a bit too much force, the lower flange can easily break from the excess pressure, necessitating replacement.

With new bridle straps installed, removing the action for necessary maintenance doesn't cause a problem, in that the wippen is held correctly in position, saving the time and expense of unwanted repairs.

How to know if a strap needs replacement?

When we remove the action of an upright piano for maintenance, a broken or missing strap can cause certain parts to become misaligned or fall out of place. This makes servicing more complicated and increases the risk of damaging other components.

Potential Issues:

  • An action reinstalled with faulty straps can lead to blockages and breakages, requiring more expensive repairs.
  • By addressing this issue in advance, strap replacement ensures the piano’s reliable operation for decades to come.

How does the repair process work?

  • Removing the Mechanism – The action is carefully removed and transported to our workshop.
  • Removing the Old Straps – Worn-out straps are taken off to prevent any interference with the mechanism.
  • Installing New Straps – Depending on the piano type, we use cork, spring-loaded, or braided straps.
  • Final Adjustments – We make the necessary adjustments to ensure the action is stable and easy to maintain.

Can I perform this repair myself?

The piano mechanism is a complex structure with thousands of interconnected parts. A single mistake can lead to costly damage, often exceeding the cost of a professional intervention.

As specialists, we have the tools and expertise to carry out this repair with precision, ensuring optimal durability and performance.

Should all straps be replaced if only some are damaged?

Ideally, yes. When one strap begins to deteriorate, the others are likely to follow. Replacing all the straps in a single intervention ensures consistent maintenance and prevents a mix of straps replaced at different times.
