Nicolas Lessard, new RPT!

Piano Technique Montreal is proud to announce that its co-owner, Nicolas Lessard, received his Registered Piano Technician (RPT) certification on Saturday, July 13, 2019, during the annual convention of the Piano Technicians Guild in Tucson, Arizona. He now joins the select group of technicians who hold this prestigious title.

The mission of the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG) is to promote the highest level of excellence in the piano industry. It provides regional and national conventions, chapter meetings, discussion forums, and online tools, all of which are invaluable resources for technicians of all levels, from novices to experienced specialists in restoration or technicians for concert halls.

A typical convention brings together technicians, piano manufacturers, as well as suppliers of tuning tools and software, providing them with a series of presentations and courses on various subjects, such as tuning theory, new approaches to damper adjustments, improving micro-business management, and more.

The convention is also the ideal opportunity to take the three exams leading to the RPT certification:

  1. A written theoretical exam;
  2. A practical exam in three parts: upright piano regulation, grand piano regulation, and repairs;
  3. A three-part tuning exam: aural tuning of the A and temperament, tuning of the bass and treble octaves, unisons, and stability.

When a technician receives their certification during a convention, they are led to the exhibitors’ hall to be acclaimed by their peers, with the examiner loudly exclaiming, “We have a new RPT!!!” Congratulations, handshakes, and well-wishes follow.

It is undoubtedly a moment that Nicolas will cherish in his memory for a long time.
